Mykola Vaskevych

backend & ML engineer · Ireland

I build backends in Java and Python, and train neural networks — sometimes for research, sometimes because the GPU was idle. Computer Systems graduate from the University of Limerick (first class honours), starting an M.Sc. in Computer Science at Trinity College Dublin this September.

During an 8-month co-op at Black Box I worked on DeskVue, a Linux-based KVM-over-IP product: Flask services on the device, a Spring Boot backend for the management server, and its test suite, which I rewrote from Java/Selenium to Python/Playwright. My bachelor's thesis compared value-based and actor-critic deep RL across Atari and classic control.

Daily drivers: Arch Linux, Neovim, uv, a split keyboard running my own ZMK firmware, and an RTX 4090 that spends its nights training GANs. Everything else runs in a small homelab that breaks about as often as it teaches me something.

This page sits on a generative canvas — there are seven backgrounds to pick from; some follow your cursor.

selected projects

  • Replicated key-value store on a hand-written, sans-I/O Raft core. Zero dependencies, deterministic simulation tests, live leader failover.
  • Local Irish auction platform (eBay-style). Spring Boot microservices backend with 10 services; React 19 + Playwright frontend.
  • Patched NVIDIA StyleGAN3 for PyTorch 2.10 + CUDA 13.x and trained on the BreCaHAD breast cancer histopathology dataset.
  • Three experiments pitting DQN/QR-DQN against A2C/PPO/RecurrentPPO on Atari and classic control, evaluated with rliable statistics.
  • Scrapes the UL timetable portal and generates visual PNG schedules in 7 colour themes, plus .ics calendar export.
